About Us

Success through collaboration

The English Collective is the brainchild of a group of lifelong teachers and friends who were unhappy with the learning options on offer for Chinese students of English in Shanghai.

We have learned from the successes and failings of other schools and taken that knowledge to reinvent the English training centre. We’ve created one that puts the power into the hands of trainers and students.

Working closely with the Language Collective and the Mandarin Collective, the English Collective is a collaboration between the trainers and members of each Collective. In our classrooms, hallways and online members can mingle with others from various cultures around the world, exchange language, practice speaking, and develop rewarding relationships.

The next generation of learning

English Collective is establishing a new generation of learning where members of the collective work together to succeed through a collaborative process.

Our curriculum is not set in stone. Instead, it revolves around the interests and needs of our members and the personalities and strengths of our trainers. Members have direct input into what they learn, and help to shape and mould their own and other member’s learning. This means you can pick and choose what you want to learn and stay in control of your own progress.

Our schedule of courses will be available to view online four weeks in advance, and will be created according to feedback from members of the English Collective.

Our team is here to help you work out your own training needs and make sure you achieve them.

By teachers for students

English Collective is owned and managed by trainers, so you don’t have to deal with the barrier of an administrator who doesn’t have your progress at heart. Here, you are in intimate contact with a trainer who truly cares about your progress.

All of our trainers are native English speakers who understand the specific needs of Chinese learners, and all of our trainers have spent several years in China. Our team will provide regular consultations with our members to make sure they are meeting the goals they set for themselves, and also that the English Collective is providing the right platform for their own learning.

We are serious about your goals and we work hard with you to meet them.
